Deer Season Countdown

The primary purpose for this trip was to get the camper back to the ranch and fill feeders before Texas’ whitetail deer season opener. Luckily, Kirk’s son Kolton, joined us again. While Kirk and I can handle an 80-bags work session, we always appreciate the help and hanging out with Kolton.

Friday Evening Hunt

Kirk and I got the camper setup and Kolton arrived from San Marcos in time for a Friday evening hunt. I left my gun at the camper because it was past time to let Kirk have the first shot. Unfortunately, the two pigs that came in never stopped moving and only stayed around for 15 to 20 seconds. Therefore, Kirk did not get a shot.

Smarter Pigs

The next time we saw pigs was on Sunday morning. While the pigs stayed around longer, they acted extremely nervous and were continuously moving around. In fact, Kirk provided left-right-up-down tracking instructions for over five minutes. Then we took a 30-second break allowing me to shoulder off the gun and take a few deep breaths. You did not expect me to leave my gun at the camper for the entire weekend, did you?

The Shot

As heard on the video, once back on the gun, Kirk provides a few directional commands allowing us to drop another pig.

Dead Eyes Getting Better Mission

As mentioned in the Heroes Ranch Thank You post, Kirk and I were humbled and returned from that hunt with a mission to get better. With every successful hunt, the Dead Eyes Duo is getting more comfortable and gaining confidence in the new gear. Check out the Heroes Ranch category for additional posts featuring the getting better theme.
