The Audio Slalom Learn to Compete and Tricks Learn to Compete series both probably should have started with this post.
In short to compete in the vision impaired division at a U.S. National tournament, you need to be “legally blind” as defined in the United States.
In the United States, legal blindness is defined as having central visual acuity of 20/200 or less in your better eye, even while wearing corrective lenses. It also means that your field of vision is less than 20 degrees. This means that to see something clearly that someone with normal vision can see from 200 feet away, you would need to be 20 feet or closer to it.
You should be evaluated by an ophthalmologist, an ophthalmic optician, or a physiologist with clinical experience in ophthalmic testing for visual acuity and field of vision to determine if you meet the above requirements.
For more details, testing forms, and to verify you meet all the requirements, you should review the 2024 IWWF Disabled Rules,2024 IWWF Competition Handbook for Disabled, and 2024 IWWF Competition Handbook for Disabled – Addendum. PDF files for each of the three documents can be found at IWWF disabled Rules and Handbooks.
